What Is an Age Calculator?

An age calculator is a tool that computes the exact difference between your date of birth and a target date (usually today). Unlike simply subtracting years, a proper age calculator accounts for varying month lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and leap years to give you a precise result in years, months, and days.

Why You Might Need to Know Your Exact Age

  • Government forms & applications: Passport, visa, Aadhaar, voter ID, and driving license applications require your exact age in years, months, and days.
  • School & college admissions: Many institutions have age cutoff dates. Knowing your exact age on a specific date determines eligibility.
  • Job applications: Government jobs in India (SSC, UPSC, banking) have strict age limits. Even one day can matter.
  • Insurance & retirement: Life insurance premiums and retirement benefit eligibility depend on your exact age.
  • Legal milestones: Voting age (18), drinking age, marriage age, and senior citizen benefits all require precise age verification.
  • Curiosity: How many days have you been alive? What day were you born on? How many days until your next birthday?

How Age Is Calculated

The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar method, which is the standard used worldwide for official purposes:

  1. Years: Count complete years from DOB to target date. A year is complete only after the same date has passed.
  2. Months: Count remaining complete months after whole years are accounted for.
  3. Days: Count remaining days after whole months.

Handling Edge Cases

  • Leap years: February 29 birthdays — the calculator correctly handles leap year babies. In non-leap years, the birthday is considered as March 1.
  • Month boundaries: Born on January 31 — since February doesn't have 31 days, the calculator adjusts using the last day of the month.
  • End-of-month dates: Born on the 30th — in months with only 28/29 days, the calculation accounts for the shorter month.

Age Examples

Example 1: Standard Calculation

Born: January 15, 1995. Today: March 26, 2026. Age: 31 years, 2 months, 11 days. Total days: approximately 11,393.

Example 2: Leap Year Birthday

Born: February 29, 2000. In 2025 (non-leap year), your birthday falls on March 1. In 2028 (leap year), you celebrate on your actual date. As of March 26, 2026: 26 years, 0 months, 25 days.

Example 3: Government Job Eligibility

UPSC age limit is 32 years for general category. Born: July 10, 1994. Cutoff date: August 1, 2026. Age on cutoff: 32 years, 0 months, 22 days — exceeds the limit by 22 days. Exact age matters!

Example 4: School Admission

A school requires children to be at least 6 years old by March 31, 2027. Born: April 15, 2021. Age on March 31, 2027: 5 years, 11 months, 16 days — does not qualify. Born: March 30, 2021: 6 years, 0 months, 1 day — qualifies.
