Typing Speed Test — Measure and Improve Your WPM
Typing is one of the most useful everyday skills, whether you're writing essays, coding, or answering emails. This test measures your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy so you can benchmark where you are and track your progress over time.
What counts as a "good" typing speed?
- Beginner — under 30 WPM, often typing with a few fingers and looking at the keyboard.
- Average — around 40 WPM, which is typical for most computer users.
- Good — 60–70 WPM, usually with touch typing and minimal errors.
- Fast — 80–100 WPM, common among writers, programmers and data-entry professionals.
- Expert — 100+ WPM, achieved with consistent practice and full touch typing.
How WPM is calculated
A "word" is standardised as 5 characters (including spaces), so speed doesn't depend on how long the actual words are. Your net WPM counts only correctly typed characters: (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. The test also shows raw WPM (every keystroke, including mistakes) and your accuracy percentage, because fast typing only helps if it's accurate.
How to type faster
- Touch type — learn the home row (ASDF JKL;) and type without looking at the keys.
- Accuracy first — slow down until you're accurate; speed builds naturally on top of good habits.
- Use all ten fingers — assign each finger its own keys instead of hunting and pecking.
- Good posture — sit up, wrists floating, feet flat, screen at eye level.
- Practise daily — a few focused minutes a day beats occasional long sessions.
